A manhole cover is simply a lid sitting on a hole in the ground. The only question that really matters is: what is the heaviest thing that will ever drive over that lid? A person walking weighs under 100 kg. A car puts roughly 500 kg on one wheel. A loaded truck can put 5,000 kg or more on a single wheel. The lid must carry the heaviest of these without cracking — so you always choose the cover by the worst load it will ever see, not the usual one.
There are three common materials. Cast iron is the old classic — strong, but thieves steal it because scrap dealers pay for metal. RCC/SFRC (concrete with steel fibres) is heavy and cheap, and nobody steals a 70 kg slab of concrete worth nothing as scrap. FRP (fibre-reinforced plastic composite) is light, rust-proof and also has zero scrap value, but quality varies wildly between makers — a genuine heavy-duty FRP cover is thick and heavy for a plastic product; a fake one is a thin shell.
One-sentence verdict: for gardens and footpaths buy light-duty FRP or SFRC; for a car driveway buy at least a medium-duty (B125 / MD-10) cover; for any road that trucks can enter, buy heavy-duty SFRC (HD-20) or certified D400 FRP — and always buy the matching frame.

When in doubt between two classes, buy the higher one — the price difference is small; the cost of a cracked cover under a truck is not.
Concrete covers in India are made to IS 12592:2002 (Precast Concrete Manhole Cover and Frame — Specification). FRP/composite covers are usually rated against the European EN 124 classes (the 2015 edition has a dedicated part, EN 124-5, for composite covers). The two systems test differently, but they map roughly like this:

EN 124's own placement guidance: A15 for pedestrian-only areas; B125 for car parks, pedestrian zones and driveways with infrequent vehicle access; C250 for kerbside zones and areas of slow-moving heavy traffic; D400 for road carriageways, hard shoulders and parking areas; E600 and F900 for docks, industrial yards and aircraft pavements.
Two practical notes. First, the tonne figure in the grade name (LD-2.5, MD-10) is the test load the cover must survive in a lab press, not a "safe daily traffic" number — real roads add impact and repetition, which is exactly why you buy one class above your usual traffic. Second, common clear openings in IS 12592 are 450, 500, 560 and 600 mm circular, 450 × 600 mm rectangular, 560 × 560 mm square, and 900 × 450 / 900 × 560 mm rectangular "scrapper" covers for desilting access.

SFRC (steel fibre reinforced concrete) is not ordinary RCC with rebar: IS 12592 requires fibres of not more than 0.75 mm diameter, aspect ratio 50–80, at a minimum 0.5 per cent of concrete volume. The fibres arrest cracks throughout the section, which is why SFRC covers can be thinner and tougher than plain RCC covers of the same grade. If a seller offers a suspiciously cheap "RCC cover", ask whether it is fibre-reinforced to IS 12592 or just site-cast concrete with a mesh — the latter has no defined load grade at all.
Cast iron's biggest weakness in India is not engineering, it is the scrap market. A large CI cover contains 50–150 kg of saleable metal, and stolen covers leave open manholes that injure people and create liability for the owner or civic body. The problem is old and well documented — even Chandigarh's heritage Le Corbusier-designed CI covers were stolen over the years and surfaced at international auctions, and the municipal corporation moved to replace roughly 2,000 of them, using concrete covers as replacements. This is the core reason Indian municipal bodies and builders shifted new work to SFRC and FRP: a concrete or composite cover is worth nothing at a kabadi shop, so it stays where you installed it. When you price the three materials, add the replacement-after-theft probability to cast iron's column — that is usually what settles the decision.
A cover is only half the product; the frame is the other half. The frame is the ring or rectangle that gets embedded in the chamber's concrete haunching, and the cover seats inside it. Buy the cover and frame as a matched pair from the same manufacturer — mixing brands is the single most common cause of rocking and noise. IS 12592 specifically requires that HD-20 and EHD-35 seatings be manufactured (ground if necessary) to ensure "stability and quietness in use".
Installation rules that prevent 90 per cent of problems: bed the frame on a full mortar/concrete haunch (minimum M20) with no voids, set the frame top flush with the finished surface (2–5 mm proud on flexible pavements), let the haunching cure before traffic, and never let the cover bear on two points only. For tiled or paved driveways, recessed (tray-type) covers are available in both FRP and metal — the tray is filled with the same tile or paver, so the access point disappears visually while remaining liftable.
FRP quality varies more than any other cover material because strength comes from glass fibre content, and glass is the costly ingredient. A "resin-rich" cover — mostly cheap resin and filler with a token glass mat — looks identical on day one and cracks within a season. Check four things:
Case 1 — Cracked driveway cover at a house in Indore. A homeowner has a 560 mm chamber in the car driveway with a cracked site-cast concrete lid. The heaviest load is a 2.2 t SUV (roughly 550 kg per wheel) plus the occasional delivery tempo. Correct purchase: an MD-10 SFRC cover with matching frame (about ₹1,200–1,500) or a B125 FRP cover (about ₹1,500–2,500 with frame). An LD-2.5 cover would be ₹300–500 cheaper and would crack again within a year or two of SUV traffic — a false saving of under ₹500 against a repeat purchase plus re-fixing labour.
Case 2 — Housing society specifying covers for a new sewer line. A society is laying a sewer line under an internal lane used by 10,000-litre water tankers (gross ~16 t, rear wheel loads around 3–4 t each) and garbage compactors. The consultant specifies HD-20 SFRC covers to IS 12592 with BIS-marked frames on all 12 chambers, at roughly ₹2,300 per 600 × 600 mm cover-and-frame set — about ₹27,600 total. The MD-10 alternative would have saved around ₹10,000 upfront and predictably failed under tanker traffic. On the two chambers falling inside the paved gate apron, recessed FRP covers were used so pavers run through visually.
Case 3 — Why civic bodies abandoned cast iron. Municipal experience across India follows the same arc: CI covers performed well structurally but disappeared to scrap theft, leaving open manholes and repeat purchase costs of several thousand rupees per cover per incident. Chandigarh's replacement of its stolen and vulnerable heritage CI covers with concrete ones is the best-documented example. New municipal tenders today overwhelmingly specify SFRC (IS 12592) for carriageways and FRP for footpaths and medians precisely because both have zero resale value as scrap.

Lifecycle view. SFRC is the cheapest per tonne of rated load and typically lasts 15–20 years if correctly graded and seated; budget for occasional edge-chipping repairs. Certified FRP costs 1.5–2.5 times the equivalent SFRC cover but weighs a third as much (easier desilting access), never corrodes, and manufacturers commonly claim 25–30 year service lives. Cast iron matches FRP on structural life but carries a real annual theft probability — one theft wipes out any purchase-price advantage and adds the safety liability of an open chamber. For most private buyers the working rule is: SFRC where weight does not matter and budget does; FRP where frequent opening, appearance or corrosion matters; cast iron only where a specification forces it.
1. Putting a light-duty cover on a driveway. An LD-2.5/A15 cover survives feet, not wheels; the first SUV or tempo cracks it, and a cracked cover over a sewer chamber is a leg-breaking hazard. Fix: minimum MD-10/B125 anywhere a four-wheeler can physically reach, even occasionally.
2. Buying a cover without its matching frame. A cover resting on brick edges or a mismatched frame rocks, clatters, chips and eventually breaks at the rim. Fix: always buy cover and frame as a factory-matched set from the same maker, and reject sets where the cover does not sit dead flat.
3. Choosing FRP by colour and price instead of weight and certificate. The ₹690 "40-tonne" cover and the ₹3,000 certified D400 cover look identical in photographs; only the glass content differs. Fix: weigh the cover, demand the EN 124-5 certificate or third-party load-test report, and check for moulded-in class markings.
4. Poor haunching under the frame. A frame bedded on loose brickbats or thin mortar settles unevenly; the cover then rocks, and impact loads hammer both cover and chamber ring. Fix: seat the frame on a full, void-free M20 concrete haunch, level with the finished surface, and keep traffic off until it cures.
5. Ignoring occasional heavy vehicles. Societies size covers for cars and forget the water tanker, the fire tender and the shifting truck — each of which will cross every chamber in the lane at least once. Fix: grade for the heaviest plausible visitor (HD-20/C250 in shared lanes), not the daily average.
6. Reusing an old frame with a new cover. A new cover seated in a worn, corroded or different-profile frame makes point contact and fails early. Fix: replace cover and frame together whenever the frame is damaged or of unknown make.
Neither is universally best. SFRC gives the lowest price per tonne of load capacity and suits roads and lanes; certified FRP wins where you need light weight, corrosion resistance, zero theft value and a cleaner look, such as driveways, courtyards and footpaths. Match the class to the traffic first, then choose material.
Certified FRP covers are made in the full EN 124 range: A15 (15 kN), B125 (125 kN), C250 (250 kN) and D400 (400 kN); E600 composite covers also exist. Capacity depends entirely on glass fibre content and construction, so insist on the class marking and test certificate rather than the seller's verbal claim.
As of mid-2026, indicative trade prices run from about ₹500 for a small light-duty SFRC cover to ₹850–1,500 for a 600 mm heavy-duty SFRC cover (₹2,000–2,500 with frame), and roughly ₹2,000–4,000 for an equivalent certified FRP cover. Cast iron heavy-duty covers cost ₹5,000 upwards and carry theft risk.
Surface fading (chalking of the gelcoat pigment) over a few years is normal and cosmetic. Structural UV damage is a problem mainly in low-grade, resin-rich covers; properly made covers with adequate glass content and UV-stabilised resin are routinely warranted for 10+ years outdoors.
