The Simple Answer (Explain Like I'm 5)

Think of your building as a body. Clean water goes in through one set of pipes, and everything used — toilet flushes, bathwater, kitchen water, rain on the roof — must leave through another. SWR stands for Soil, Waste and Rainwater, and SWR pipes are the building's exit plumbing: a system of smooth grey or white plastic slides that let dirty water race downhill to the sewer without ever stopping.

Gravity does all the work, so every pipe must lean slightly downhill — like a playground slide. Too flat, and solids sit and rot inside. Too steep, and water rushes off leaving solids behind. The slope has to be just right.

There is one more trick. The sewer is full of foul-smelling gas, and the pipes connect your bathroom directly to it. So under every drain sits a trap — a U-shaped bend that always holds a small pool of water. That pool is a liquid cork: water passes through it, but smells cannot come back up. If that water plug dries out or gets sucked away, the sewer breathes into your home. That is why bathrooms smell — almost never because of the pipe itself.

The Technical Deep-Dive

IS 13592: Type A vs Type B — the difference that decides failures

Indian SWR pipes are made to IS 13592:2013, which covers PVC-U pipes from 40 mm up to 315 mm outside diameter and defines two classes by wall thickness and duty:

  • Type A — thinner wall, specified by the standard for ventilation pipework and rainwater applications (including rainwater harvesting). Indicative minimum walls: about 1.8 mm at 75 mm dia and 2.2 mm at 110 mm dia. Type A is not manufactured in 160 mm.
  • Type B — thicker wall, specified for soil and waste discharge: roughly 3.2 mm minimum wall at both 75 mm and 110 mm, and about 4.0 mm at 160 mm.

The market shorthand "Type A for rain, Type B for drain" is exactly what the standard intends. The common site error is the reverse: buying cheaper Type A for WC lines or burying it under paving, where the thin wall deflects, cracks at joints and leaks. Matching fittings are covered by IS 14735, which applies to injection-moulded PVC-U fittings for soil, waste, ventilation and rainwater service. Standard supply length in India is 3 m (also 6 m), in 75, 110 and 160 mm for drainage plus 40/50/63 mm for fixture waste.

System layouts: two-pipe, one-pipe and single-stack

NBC 2016 Part 9 (Plumbing Services) recognises a hierarchy of drainage layouts:

  • Two-pipe system: soil (WC) and waste (bath/kitchen) travel in separate stacks, each with its own vent — four vertical pipes. It gives maximum protection and suits buildings where fixtures are scattered or waste water is recycled separately, but it costs the most in pipe, shaft space and labour.
  • One-pipe system: one stack takes both soil and waste, accompanied by a separate vent stack connected near the trap crowns. This is the workhorse for mid-rise and high-rise buildings.
  • Single-stack system: one generously sized stack does everything, with no separate vent — the stack itself, terminating open above the roof, is the vent. It depends on discipline: a 110 mm minimum stack, deep-seal traps (75 mm seal), short branch connections and limits on fixture distance from the stack. It is the most economical layout and is now standard for most low-rise Indian housing, typically up to four or five storeys.

Rule of thumb: G+2 to G+4 with bathrooms stacked one above another — single stack. Taller, or bathrooms offset floor to floor — one-pipe with a vent stack (usually one size smaller than the soil stack, tied back to it at intervals).

Slope and sizing: the 1-in-40 to 1-in-100 window

Horizontal drains must hold a self-cleansing velocity (about 0.6–3.0 m/s per IS 1742) so solids stay suspended:

That means a 110 mm pipe must fall at least 100 mm over a 6 m run — roughly 175 mm at the preferred 1 in 40. Note the counter-intuitive part: bigger pipes need less slope, and steeper is not automatically better, because very steep runs let water outrun solids. Sizing follows the NBC discharge-unit method; in practice a 110 mm stack comfortably serves a typical low-rise residential load, and 160 mm appears mainly in building drains, larger stacks and rainwater headers.

Traps and venting: protecting the 50 mm water seal

NBC 2016 Part 9 requires every fixture to drain through a trap holding a water seal of at least 50 mm (75 mm deep-seal for floor traps and single-stack systems). Trap types you will actually buy:

  • P, Q and S traps — named for outlet direction: P exits horizontally (wall connection), S exits vertically down (floor connection), Q in between. WCs come with an integral P or S trap.
  • Floor trap (nahani trap) — the jaali-covered trap collecting bathroom wash water; buy deep-seal versions, not shallow ones.
  • Bottle trap — the compact chrome trap under wash basins.

The seal's enemy is pressure. A full-bore slug of water falling down a stack acts like a piston: it pushes air ahead (blowing bubbles up through lower-floor traps) and pulls vacuum behind (siphoning water out of traps — the gurgle you hear after a flush). Venting equalises this: the stack must terminate open to atmosphere above the roof, well clear of windows and terraces in use, with a cowl; in one-pipe and two-pipe systems a separate 50–75 mm vent or anti-siphonage pipe connects near the trap crowns. A trap that gurgles is a trap losing its seal — and a smell complaint waiting to happen.

Ring-fit vs solvent-fit joints: the thermal movement question

IS 13592 pipes come with two socket options, and the choice is about expansion, not strength:

  • Solvent-fit (pasting type): the spigot is cemented into a plain socket with solvent cement (IS 14182), fusing a rigid, monolithic joint. Zero leak path if made well — but zero movement allowance.
  • Ring-fit (rubber ring / push-fit): an elastomeric ring in a grooved socket seals the joint while letting the pipe slide. PVC-U expands roughly 0.06–0.07 mm per metre per °C — over a 3 m length on a sun-baked west-facing shaft seeing a 25 °C swing, that is about 5 mm of movement per length. Ring joints absorb it; long solvent-welded stacks instead bow, creak or shear at fittings.

Practical rule: ring-fit for vertical stacks and long external runs (insert to the witness mark, then pull back ~10 mm as the expansion gap); solvent-fit is acceptable for short, concealed branch runs at fairly constant temperature. Never dry-fit without the ring, and never cement a joint designed for a ring.

Silent SWR: multilayer low-noise systems

In apartments where a shaft runs beside a bedroom, standard single-layer PVC stacks audibly "whoosh" at every flush. Indian manufacturers now offer three-layer low-noise drainage systems:

  • Prince Silentfit — three-layer PVC-U construction with a sound-insulating middle layer; the maker rates it below 11 dB at 2 L/s flow. Ring-fit in 75/110/160 mm, solvent-fit from 40–160 mm.
  • Astral Silencio — three-layer mineral-reinforced polypropylene (density ~1.9 g/cm³), rated under 10 dB at 2 L/s to the EN 14366 acoustic test method; push-fit joints, 40–200 mm.

The dense middle layer stops the pipe wall drumming. Expect a significant price premium over standard Type B (see cost table), which is why silent systems are usually specified selectively — the soil stacks adjoining living spaces — rather than building-wide.

Three budgeting angles: (1) Fittings are not a rounding error — on a typical bathroom rough-in, tees, bends, traps and clamps add 40–60% over the bare pipe cost. (2) Labour for SWR work in Indore is usually quoted per bathroom or per point; expect drainage labour to add roughly 30–50% over material for a standard flat, more for core-cutting in renovation work.   1. Using Type A pipe for soil lines or underground runs. The thin wall (about 2.2 mm vs 3.2 mm at 110 mm) deflects under soil load and traffic, cracking at sockets within a few seasons. Reserve Type A for vents and rainwater; put Type B on every soil, waste and buried line.
  2. Skipping the vent or terminating the stack below parapet level. Every flush then siphons or blows trap seals, producing gurgling drains and sewer smell indoors. Carry the stack full-bore above the roof with a cowl, away from windows, and add a vent stack where the layout demands it.
  3. Wrong slope — usually too flat, sometimes too steep. Flatter than about 1 in 57 on a 100/110 mm line lets solids settle and choke the pipe; extreme slopes let water outrun solids with the same result. Set 110 mm runs at 1 in 40 to 1 in 60 and check with a level, not by eye.
  4. Floor traps without a proper seal, or seals that dry out. A plain tee under a jaali, or a shallow-seal trap, is an open pipe to the sewer; unused guest-bathroom traps also evaporate dry in an Indore summer. Fit deep-seal (75 mm) nahani traps and pour a mug of water into unused drains weekly.
  5. Solvent-welding an entire external stack with no expansion allowance. Sun-facing PVC stacks move several millimetres per length between winter nights and May afternoons, and rigid joints eventually creak, bow or crack. Use ring-fit sockets on stacks and leave the ~10 mm expansion gap at the witness mark.
  6. Tying rainwater downpipes into the soil stack. A cloudburst then pressurises the drainage system, blowing water out of lower-floor traps and flooding gullies. NBC practice is to keep rainwater piping separate down to ground level — and it also keeps your rainwater harvestable.
