Think of your building as a body. Clean water goes in through one set of pipes, and everything used — toilet flushes, bathwater, kitchen water, rain on the roof — must leave through another. SWR stands for Soil, Waste and Rainwater, and SWR pipes are the building's exit plumbing: a system of smooth grey or white plastic slides that let dirty water race downhill to the sewer without ever stopping.
Gravity does all the work, so every pipe must lean slightly downhill — like a playground slide. Too flat, and solids sit and rot inside. Too steep, and water rushes off leaving solids behind. The slope has to be just right.
There is one more trick. The sewer is full of foul-smelling gas, and the pipes connect your bathroom directly to it. So under every drain sits a trap — a U-shaped bend that always holds a small pool of water. That pool is a liquid cork: water passes through it, but smells cannot come back up. If that water plug dries out or gets sucked away, the sewer breathes into your home. That is why bathrooms smell — almost never because of the pipe itself.

Indian SWR pipes are made to IS 13592:2013, which covers PVC-U pipes from 40 mm up to 315 mm outside diameter and defines two classes by wall thickness and duty:
The market shorthand "Type A for rain, Type B for drain" is exactly what the standard intends. The common site error is the reverse: buying cheaper Type A for WC lines or burying it under paving, where the thin wall deflects, cracks at joints and leaks. Matching fittings are covered by IS 14735, which applies to injection-moulded PVC-U fittings for soil, waste, ventilation and rainwater service. Standard supply length in India is 3 m (also 6 m), in 75, 110 and 160 mm for drainage plus 40/50/63 mm for fixture waste.
NBC 2016 Part 9 (Plumbing Services) recognises a hierarchy of drainage layouts:
Rule of thumb: G+2 to G+4 with bathrooms stacked one above another — single stack. Taller, or bathrooms offset floor to floor — one-pipe with a vent stack (usually one size smaller than the soil stack, tied back to it at intervals).
Horizontal drains must hold a self-cleansing velocity (about 0.6–3.0 m/s per IS 1742) so solids stay suspended:

That means a 110 mm pipe must fall at least 100 mm over a 6 m run — roughly 175 mm at the preferred 1 in 40. Note the counter-intuitive part: bigger pipes need less slope, and steeper is not automatically better, because very steep runs let water outrun solids. Sizing follows the NBC discharge-unit method; in practice a 110 mm stack comfortably serves a typical low-rise residential load, and 160 mm appears mainly in building drains, larger stacks and rainwater headers.
NBC 2016 Part 9 requires every fixture to drain through a trap holding a water seal of at least 50 mm (75 mm deep-seal for floor traps and single-stack systems). Trap types you will actually buy:
The seal's enemy is pressure. A full-bore slug of water falling down a stack acts like a piston: it pushes air ahead (blowing bubbles up through lower-floor traps) and pulls vacuum behind (siphoning water out of traps — the gurgle you hear after a flush). Venting equalises this: the stack must terminate open to atmosphere above the roof, well clear of windows and terraces in use, with a cowl; in one-pipe and two-pipe systems a separate 50–75 mm vent or anti-siphonage pipe connects near the trap crowns. A trap that gurgles is a trap losing its seal — and a smell complaint waiting to happen.
IS 13592 pipes come with two socket options, and the choice is about expansion, not strength:
Practical rule: ring-fit for vertical stacks and long external runs (insert to the witness mark, then pull back ~10 mm as the expansion gap); solvent-fit is acceptable for short, concealed branch runs at fairly constant temperature. Never dry-fit without the ring, and never cement a joint designed for a ring.

The dense middle layer stops the pipe wall drumming. Expect a significant price premium over standard Type B (see cost table), which is why silent systems are usually specified selectively — the soil stacks adjoining living spaces — rather than building-wide.
1. G+3 apartment stack in Indore (single-stack design). A builder in Rau is stacking one toilet and one bath vertically over four floors. Layout: one 110 mm Type B ring-fit soil stack taking WC plus 75 mm waste branches through door-tees at each floor, terminating a metre above the terrace with a cowl — a textbook NBC single-stack case with 75 mm deep-seal floor traps. Material take-off per stack: about 13.5 m of 110 mm pipe (5 × 3 m lengths, ₹2,500–3,500), 4 door/swept tees (₹500–900), bends, clamps every floor, cowl and traps — roughly ₹5,000–8,000 in material per stack. Compare that with a two-pipe layout for the same riser: nearly double the pipe and shaft width for no functional gain at this height.
2. Bathroom renovation with a foul-smell mystery. A homeowner in Sudama Nagar retiles a bathroom; two weeks later the room smells of sewer and the basin gurgles after every WC flush. Inspection findings: the mason replaced the old deep-seal nahani trap with a plain 110 mm tee (no water seal at all), and the shortened stack now ends below parapet level, so flush-induced suction pulls at every seal. Fix: one 110×75 mm deep-seal floor trap (₹150–250), 3 m of 75 mm Type A pipe to re-extend the vent termination above the parapet (~₹300), half a day of labour. Total under ₹2,500 — versus months of "mystery smell" that no amount of cleaning would have solved, because cleaning does not refill a missing trap.
3. Monsoon rainwater stack sizing for an Indore terrace. Indore receives about 945 mm of rain a year, with roughly 545 mm falling in July–August alone — short, intense bursts, not gentle drizzle. Per the IS 1742 roof-drainage table, one 100 mm downpipe serves 85.4 m² of roof at 50 mm/hr rainfall intensity, but only 42.7 m² at 100 mm/hr. For a 120 m² terrace designed for a 100 mm/hr cloudburst: 120 ÷ 42.7 ≈ 2.8, so provide three 110 mm Type A downpipes (a 75 mm pipe manages just 20.4 m² at that intensity — undersized for anything but a balcony). Keep rainwater stacks separate from soil stacks; a monsoon surge in a shared stack pressurises the system and blows trap seals across lower floors.

Three budgeting angles: (1) Fittings are not a rounding error — on a typical bathroom rough-in, tees, bends, traps and clamps add 40–60% over the bare pipe cost. (2) Labour for SWR work in Indore is usually quoted per bathroom or per point; expect drainage labour to add roughly 30–50% over material for a standard flat, more for core-cutting in renovation work. (3) The Type B premium is cheap insurance — upgrading a whole G+3 stack from Type A to Type B costs only a few hundred rupees per floor, versus tens of thousands to break masonry and replace a cracked concealed line later.
SWR stands for Soil, Waste and Rainwater. It refers to PVC-U piping made to IS 13592 for carrying WC discharge (soil), used water from baths, basins and kitchens (waste), and roof rainwater — always by gravity, never under pressure.
Type B, always. IS 13592 specifies Type B's thicker wall (about 3.2 mm at 110 mm) for soil and waste discharge, while Type A's thinner wall is meant only for ventilation and rainwater lines. Using Type A on a WC line saves perhaps ₹100–150 per length and risks the whole concealed run.
Between 1 in 40 and 1 in 60 — that is, at least 25 mm of fall per 1.5 m at the steeper end. IS 1742 puts the absolute minimum for a 100 mm drain at about 1 in 57; a 160 mm drain can run as flat as 1 in 100.
Almost always a failed water seal: a floor trap that has dried out, been siphoned by an unvented stack, or was never a sealed trap to begin with. Pour water into the floor drain; if the smell stops for a day or two and returns, the seal is being lost and the venting or trap needs correction.
Type B SWR is commonly used for shallow external drains around a building with proper bedding and slope. For deeper runs or lines under vehicle movement, use heavier underground drainage pipe and give the trench compacted bedding — and never bury Type A.
Ring-fit sockets seal with a rubber ring and allow the pipe to expand and contract with temperature, which suits vertical stacks and long or sun-exposed runs. Solvent-fit joints are cemented rigid and suit short, concealed branches. Price per length is similar; the fittings and workmanship differ.
For stacks running beside bedrooms, in hotels, hospitals or premium flats — yes; three-layer systems such as Prince Silentfit and Astral Silencio are rated around 10–11 dB at 2 L/s versus the clearly audible rush of standard PVC. For ducts away from living areas, standard Type B with proper clamping is usually sufficient.
