The Simple Answer (Explain Like I'm 5)

Think of tiles like biscuits with your morning chai. A plain soft biscuit soaks up chai the moment you dip it — that is a ceramic tile. Its body is porous, so it drinks in water, stays lighter and softer, and costs less. It is perfectly happy stuck on a wall, where nothing heavy ever presses on it.

Now imagine a biscuit baked so hard and glassy that chai just rolls off it. That is a vitrified tile. It is fired at a higher temperature until the ingredients partly melt and fuse into a dense, glass-like body. Because almost no water can enter it, it is much harder to crack, does not stain easily, and shrugs off footfall, furniture and dragged luggage. That is why vitrified tiles go on floors.

And porcelain? In India, "porcelain" and "vitrified" are mostly two names for the same hard, glassy biscuit. Internationally the word is "porcelain"; in the Indian market the same low-absorption tile is sold as "vitrified". The label matters less than one number printed on the box: water absorption.

The Technical Deep-Dive

How a tile is made — and what "vitrification" is

Both ceramic and vitrified tiles start the same way: clay, feldspar, quartz and silica are milled, pressed into shape under high pressure, then fired in a kiln. The difference is the recipe and the firing. Ordinary ceramic tiles are fired at lower temperatures, so the body stays porous — full of microscopic air pockets that absorb water. Vitrified tiles use a body richer in feldspar and silica and are fired at around 1,200 °C, hot enough for the feldspar to melt and form a glassy (vitreous) phase that fills the pores and fuses the particles together. That process is vitrification. The result is a denser, heavier, harder tile — typically 2,200–2,400 kg/m³ — with water absorption below 0.5% against roughly 3–10% for common ceramic bodies.

Why does absorption matter so much? A porous body is a weaker body: water entering it weakens bonds, carries stains inward, and in cold climates freezes and expands, cracking the tile. Absorption is therefore the single number on which the entire international classification system is built.

Water-absorption groups under IS 15622 and ISO 13006

The Indian standard for pressed tiles is IS 15622:2017 (Pressed Ceramic Tiles — Specification), which follows the same classification logic as the international standard ISO 13006:2018. Tiles are grouped by forming method — "A" for extruded, "B" for dry-pressed (virtually all Indian wall and floor tiles are dry-pressed, hence the B groups) — and by water absorption, E:

(Extruded groups AIa, AIb, AIIa, AIIb and AIII follow the same absorption bands for extruded bodies.) The supporting Indian standards are IS 13712 for definitions and classification and the IS 13630 series for test methods. When a datasheet says a tile "conforms to IS 15622, Group BIa", it is telling you the tile is fully vitrified. The ISI mark on a box indicates BIS-licensed manufacture to this standard.

Strength and wear: modulus of rupture, breaking strength and PEI

Absorption groups come with matching mechanical requirements, and the gap between groups is large. Minimum values per ISO 13006 / EN 14411 annexes (tiles ≥ 7.5 mm thick):

Read that table once and the wall-vs-floor rule stops being an opinion: a vitrified floor tile must survive more than twice the load of a glazed wall tile before snapping.

For glazed surfaces there is a second, separate rating: the PEI abrasion class, which measures how fast the glaze wears under foot traffic. Class 0–I suits walls only; Class II suits bathrooms and bedrooms with soft footwear; Class III suits kitchens, halls, corridors and balconies in homes; Class IV suits hotels, sales areas and light commercial floors; Class V is for heavy pedestrian traffic — shopping centres, airports, public areas. A tile can have a very hard body but a soft glaze, so for shops and offices check PEI, not just the group.

Frost resistance (tested over repeated freeze–thaw cycles per ISO 10545-12) effectively requires a low-absorption body, which is why only Group I tiles are specified for exposed exteriors in cold regions. Stain resistance follows the same logic: the less a body and surface absorb, the less they hold on to turmeric, oil or rust.

The Indian market's family tree of vitrified tiles

Within Group BIa, the Indian industry — centred on Morbi, Gujarat — sells several sub-types that differ in how the design is applied, not in the body underneath:

  • Soluble salt (SST): the entry point. Penetrating salts are screen-printed onto the tile and soak 2–3 mm into the surface, which is then polished. Economical, but the design layer is shallow and patterns are simpler; heavy wear eventually dulls them.
  • Double charge (DCT): two layers of pigmented material are pressed together, giving a design layer 3–4 mm thick. Fewer patterns than printed tiles, but the design survives years of abrasion — the workhorse for commercial floors on a budget.
  • Full body (FBT): the colour and pigment run through the entire thickness of the tile. A chip or a deep scratch is practically invisible because the material below is the same colour. The most expensive unglazed type; specified for airports, parking areas, ramps and industrial floors.
  • GVT (glazed vitrified tiles): a vitrified body with a digitally printed design sealed under a protective glaze. This is what makes wood-look, marble-look and stone-look tiles possible at moderate cost, usually in matt or satin finishes.
  • PGVT (polished glazed vitrified tiles): GVT with a high-gloss polished glaze — the marble-look living-room tile of most new Indian homes. Nano-polished variants add a liquid silica layer that fills micro-pores for extra sheen and stain resistance, typically at a small premium.

Brand examples, purely as market reference points: Kajaria's Eternity collection is its GVT flagship (with DuRock anti-skid variants for wet and outdoor areas), Somany sells GVT under the Duragres name, and Johnson's Marbonite (vitrified), Porselano (GVT) and Endura (heavy-duty/industrial) ranges map neatly onto the same family tree.

"Porcelain" vs "vitrified": two names, mostly one tile

Internationally — Europe, the USA, ISO documents — a dry-pressed tile with E ≤ 0.5% is called a porcelain tile. In India, the very same Group BIa product is marketed as a vitrified tile. So when a showroom offers you "porcelain" at a premium over "vitrified", ask for the datasheets: if both state E ≤ 0.5% to IS 15622 / ISO 13006, they are the same class of product, and many brand datasheets quote absorption figures well below the 0.5% ceiling. The only honest differences are sub-type (full body vs glazed), finish, size and brand. Buy the number, not the noun.

A shop floor on a busy market street. An 800 sq ft showroom seeing several hundred visitors a day needs PEI Class IV–V wear resistance and a body at 35 N/mm² modulus of rupture. Double charge at ~₹50–70/sq ft (≈ ₹40,000–56,000 material) gives a 3–4 mm wear layer; full body at ~₹80–110/sq ft (≈ ₹64,000–88,000) additionally hides chips from trolleys and dropped stock. A printed soluble-salt tile here would show wear paths at the entrance within a couple of years — the ₹20,000 saved up front becomes a full re-laying bill later.

The wall-tile-on-the-floor mistake. A homeowner extends leftover glazed ceramic wall tiles (Group BIII: absorption above 10%, breaking strength minimum only 600 N) onto a balcony floor. A washing machine and monsoon rain do the rest: water enters the porous body, the bed debonds, tiles sound hollow, and two crack under point loads within the first year. A BIa vitrified tile rated at 1,300 N and E ≤ 0.5% would have cost perhaps ₹15–25 more per sq ft — far less than redoing the balcony.

Laying cost note: budget separately for installation — typically ₹70–110 per sq ft including labour, adhesive and grout for standard formats, more for large slabs. Traditional sand-cement bedding is cheaper and still common for smaller ceramic tiles, but vitrified tiles absorb almost no water, so a plain cement slurry grips them poorly; polymer-modified tile adhesive is the appropriate fixing method for vitrified and any large-format tile, and for tile-on-tile work.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Laying wall ceramic (BIII) on floors. With a minimum breaking strength of just 600 N versus 1,300 N for vitrified, wall tiles crack under furniture and point loads, and their >10% absorption invites debonding in wet areas. Always confirm the box says floor-rated, Group BIb or better for any floor.
  • Judging a tile by looks or thickness instead of absorption. Two identical-looking glossy tiles can sit in different IS 15622 groups. Ask for the datasheet and check E: ≤ 0.5% for serious floors; a quick shop test is to see whether water dropped on the unglazed back soaks in or beads up.
  • Ignoring PEI class for shops and offices. A PEI II–III glaze that lasts decades in a bedroom develops visible wear paths in months under commercial footfall. Specify PEI IV minimum for retail, V for heavy public traffic — or use unglazed double charge/full body.
  • Using glossy PGVT in bathrooms and on ramps. Polished surfaces become slippery when wet regardless of how strong the body is. Use matt or anti-skid finishes on bathroom floors, balconies and driveways, and keep the gloss for dry living areas.
  • Fixing vitrified tiles with plain sand-cement mortar. Near-zero absorption means the tile cannot key into a cement slurry, leading to hollowness and popping within a few seasons. Use polymer tile adhesive, and demand proper back-buttering on formats of 600×1200 mm and above.
  • Buying exact quantity with no margin. Cutting, breakage and future repairs typically consume 5–10% extra, and a later purchase may come from a different batch with a visible shade difference. Buy the margin upfront and record the batch/shade number from the box.

Frequently asked questions

Vitrified, in almost every case. Its water absorption is below 0.5% against 3–10% for ceramic, and its minimum flexural strength (35 N/mm²) is roughly half again higher than a ceramic floor tile's (22 N/mm² for Group BIIa). Ceramic floor tiles remain acceptable for low-traffic, dry, budget-sensitive rooms.

In India, usually nothing but the name. Both refer to dry-pressed tiles with water absorption of 0.5% or less — Group BIa under IS 15622 and ISO 13006. "Porcelain" is the international trade name; "vitrified" is the Indian one. Compare datasheet E values, not labels.

Polished finishes (PGVT, mirror-polished double charge) can be slippery when wet; the body's hardness has nothing to do with grip. Matt, satin and purpose-made anti-skid vitrified tiles are available for bathrooms, balconies and parking. Choose finish by location, not by tile family.

Yes — they are heavier, so they need proper adhesive and, for large formats at height, mechanical support during setting. The reverse is not true: ceramic wall tiles must never go on floors. Many buyers use GVT planks and slabs on feature walls and full-height bathroom walls.

Different tools for different jobs. Double charge has a 3–4 mm solid design layer that outlasts printed surfaces, making it better for shops and high-traffic floors; GVT offers far richer designs (wood, marble, stone looks) under a glaze and suits homes. For heavy commercial wear with looks, consider full body or high-PEI GVT.

Check three things on the datasheet or box: conformity to IS 15622 (ISI mark where applicable) with the water-absorption group; modulus of rupture / breaking strength; and PEI class for glazed floor tiles. Physically, inspect a few tiles from the box for flatness (edge-to-edge on a level surface), consistent shade, and undamaged corners.
