Electrofusion vs Butt Fusion for HDPE Pipe

A practical guide from the team at Puranmal Sons & Ceramix Syndicate.

Home / Guides / Electrofusion vs butt fusion

Two ways to weld HDPE

HDPE pipe is joined by melting the material together. The two main methods are butt fusion, which welds two pipe ends directly, and electrofusion, which uses a special fitting with a built-in heating element.

Butt fusion

Butt fusion joins pipe ends using a fusion machine that heats and presses them together. It's efficient for long straight runs of larger-diameter pipe on site.

Electrofusion

Electrofusion uses fittings (couplers, saddles) with embedded coils that melt and bond when powered. It's ideal for tight spaces, repairs and connections where a fusion machine is impractical.

Choosing

Long mains often use butt fusion; connections, repairs and confined spaces favour electrofusion. We supply both electrofusion fittings (Astral-Presto) and HDPE pipe — share your project for the right combination.
