Think of the water pipes in your walls like a water bottle. A plastic bottle is cheap, light and works fine for years — that is CPVC or PPR. A good steel bottle costs several times more, but it never picks up a taste, does not mind boiling water, and can outlast the person who bought it — that is stainless steel 316L.
Inside a 316L pipe, water touches only steel. There is no solvent cement, no plasticiser, nothing that can slowly leach into hot water. The pipe does not soften near a geyser, does not become brittle in sunlight, and does not sag between clamps. Joints are made in about five seconds with a battery-powered pressing tool that squeezes a fitting onto the pipe over a rubber sealing ring — no welding, no open flame, no glue.
The catch is money and manpower. The material costs roughly 3 to 5 times what CPVC costs, the pressing tool itself costs as much as a good motorcycle, and trained installers are still scarce in tier-2 cities like Indore.

All three are austenitic stainless steels. Grade 304 contains roughly 18% chromium and 8% nickel. Grade 316 adds 2–3% molybdenum, which is the single ingredient that matters for water service: molybdenum dramatically improves resistance to pitting by chlorides. Grade 316L is the same alloy with carbon held below 0.03% (versus 0.08% for standard 316). The low carbon prevents chromium carbides from forming at weld seams — a problem called sensitisation that leaves a corrosion-prone band beside every weld. Since plumbing tube is longitudinally welded and fittings are often welded assemblies, the L-grade is the correct choice for water pipe, not a marketing upgrade.
Engineers compare grades using PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number = %Cr + 3.3×%Mo + 16×%N). Grade 304 scores around 18–20; 316/316L scores around 24–26. Published corrosion data shows the practical gap: in one refinery water-service study, type 304 showed a critical pitting temperature of about 40°C at 300 ppm chlorides, while type 316 resisted pitting up to about 70°C at 500 ppm chlorides. In plain terms, 316L keeps its protective film in hot, chlorinated, chloride-bearing Indian water where 304 can start pinhole-pitting.

The expansion figure deserves attention: on a 30 m hot riser heating up by 40°C, SS 316L grows about 20 mm, CPVC about 75–85 mm, PPR about 180 mm. Plastic risers need expansion loops and careful clamping that are frequently skipped on Indian sites; steel largely designs the problem away.
Stainless steel is not magic — it is protected by a self-healing chromium-oxide film, and chlorides are that film's enemy. Practical guidance for Malwa-region water:
Hospital hot-water recirculation loop. A 300-bed hospital runs a 60°C recirculation loop 24 hours a day and periodically raises it to 70–80°C for thermal disinfection against Legionella. At 82°C a PN10 CPVC pipe is down to roughly 3.3 bar of allowable pressure — below what a pumped loop in a 10-storey block needs — and repeated thermal cycling ages solvent-cement joints. A 316L press-fit loop runs the same duty at its full ~16 bar system rating for decades. On an 800 m loop, the steel option may cost ₹8–12 lakh more installed, but it removes the single most common cause of hospital plumbing shutdowns.
Premium Indore villa, 50-year view. A 5,000 sq ft villa needs roughly 250 m of pipe and 300 fittings. Good CPVC installed: about ₹1.2–1.8 lakh. SS 316L press-fit installed: about ₹4.5–6.5 lakh. But hot-service CPVC realistically means one full repipe in years 25–30 — and by then the pipes are inside finished marble and designer bathrooms, so the repipe (breakage, piping, restoration) plausibly costs ₹8–15 lakh at future prices, plus weeks of disruption. A 100-room business hotel averaging ₹5,500 per occupied room-night loses real money when a riser leak takes a wing of 20 rooms offline for 3 days: roughly ₹2.3–3.3 lakh in room revenue alone at 70% occupancy, before repair, restoration and reputation costs. Two such events over a decade can equal the entire CPVC-to-SS premium on the hot-water risers — which is why five-star properties increasingly specify stainless for recirculation mains even while using plastic for final in-room branches.

25–50 year lifecycle, same villa: CPVC first cost ₹1.5 lakh + one mid-life repipe inside finished interiors (₹8–15 lakh future cost, disruptive) ≈ ₹10–16 lakh over 50 years. SS 316L ≈ ₹5–6.5 lakh once, plus meaningful scrap value at end of life. Over 25 years only, CPVC usually wins on pure money; over 40–50 years, or wherever a failure has a business cost, the steel case becomes strong.
Buying 304 because "it's all stainless". With chloride-rich borewell water or hot storage above 60°C, 304 can pit within a few years, and the leak appears as a pinhole inside a finished wall. Specify 316L for water lines and check the material certificate, not just the salesman's word.
Mixing metals without isolation. Connecting SS directly to old galvanised iron makes the zinc coating sacrifice itself and the GI side corrode rapidly at the junction. Use dielectric unions or an intermediate brass/gunmetal fitting at every transition, which is standard practice in reputable press-fit systems.
Hiring installers without press-tool training. An unpressed or wrongly-jawed joint can pass casual inspection and blow out months later. Insist on brand-trained fitters, matched jaws, and a documented hydrostatic pressure test that would expose any unpressed joint before walls close.
Cutting with an abrasive grinder or carbon-steel tools. Grinding overheats the cut edge and embeds carbon-steel particles that later show up as rust spots and pitting sites. Use a rotary tube cutter and dedicated stainless deburring tools.
Using decorative (ASTM A554-type) tube for water. Railing-grade tube has no water-service pressure pedigree and often the wrong weld quality. Buy tube certified to IS 17876 / EN 10312 with the test certificate.
Ignoring insulation chemistry on hot lines. Wet insulation that leaches chlorides against a hot stainless pipe causes external pitting the owner never sees. Use chloride-free insulation and keep it dry.
