A septic tank is your home's own little sewage treatment plant. It is a big, closed box buried in the ground. All the dirty water from your toilets flows into it and simply rests there for a day or two. While it rests, the heavy stuff sinks to the bottom, the greasy stuff floats to the top, and billions of tiny germs quietly eat the waste. The calmer, cleaner water in the middle then flows out into a stone-filled pit nearby, where it slowly soaks into the soil, and the earth finishes the cleaning job.
That is the whole trick: rest, settle, digest, soak. For it to work, the box has to be big enough for your family, the water leaving it must always go into a soak pit — never into an open drain — and every two to three years a tanker with a suction pipe must come and pull out the settled muck. Nobody should ever climb inside; the gases in there can kill within minutes, and the machine does the job safely.

A septic tank gives only primary treatment. Sewage enters through an inlet tee, sits for a detention period of 24 to 48 hours (the design basis in IS 2470 Part 1), and separates into three zones: a floating scum layer, a bottom sludge layer, and a clearer middle zone from which effluent leaves through the outlet tee. Anaerobic bacteria digest the settled solids, shrinking their volume between cleanings.
The inlet and outlet are not plain pipe ends. IS 2470 (Part 1):1985 calls for T-shaped dip pipes (in tanks under 1.2 m width) with the top limb rising above scum level and the bottom limb extending about 300 mm below top water level — this stops floating scum from escaping and prevents incoming flow from stirring the tank. Two-compartment tanks (the first chamber roughly twice the size of the second) settle solids better than single boxes, which is why most good masons build them that way. Ready-made three-chamber "bio septic" FRP tanks apply the same principle in factory form.
The critical point: effluent leaving even a well-built septic tank is still foul and pathogen-laden. It must go to a soak pit or dispersion trench for soil treatment. It must never be led to an open roadside drain.
The standard fixes floors that no tank should go below: minimum width 750 mm, minimum depth 1 metre below water level, and minimum liquid capacity 1,000 litres, with a 300 mm freeboard above water level. Its recommended sizes for households (Table 5 of the standard) are:

Add 300 mm freeboard to get the internal wall height. The sizing logic combines settling area for peak flow, the 24–48 hour detention volume, and storage for sludge (per-capita suspended solids taken as about 70 g/day) accumulating until the next cleaning. Note that these IS figures assume mainly toilet waste; if bath and kitchen greywater also enters the tank — common in Indian homes — builders sensibly go one size up, which is why site-built family tanks of 4,000–6,500 litres are widespread.
Part 2 of the standard covers what happens after the tank. A soak pit must have a least cross-sectional dimension of 0.9 m and be at least 1.0 m deep below the invert of the inlet pipe, either filled with brickbats/stone or lined with brick, stone or concrete blocks laid with dry open joints backed by at least 75 mm of clean coarse aggregate. Soak pits suit porous soils.
Where soil is tighter or the water table is high, a dispersion trench is used instead: trenches 0.5–1.0 m deep and 0.3–1.0 m wide, each not longer than 30 m, spaced no closer than 2 m apart, with open-jointed 75–100 mm pipes bedded in 150–250 mm of washed gravel or crushed stone.
How much soakage area you need comes from the percolation test: dig a test pit, soak it, and time how many minutes the water level takes to fall 25 mm. The standard's allowable soil application rates run from about 204 litres/m²/day for very fast soils (≤1 minute) down to about 26 litres/m²/day at 60 minutes. Black cotton soil patches around Malwa can percolate poorly — always test before finalising the pit size rather than copying a neighbour's design.

A fair summary: for up to about 6 users, a good PE or FRP tank plus a proper soak pit is faster, cheaper and more reliably watertight than an average local mason's tank. Beyond 10 users, or where trucks will pass overhead, a properly engineered RCC tank (or a heavy-duty FRP model with an engineered surround) wins.
IS 2470 Part 1 requires every septic tank to have a ventilating pipe of at least 50 mm diameter, topped with a mosquito-proof mesh cage. The vent should rise about 2 m above ground if the tank is 20 m or more from the nearest building, and 2 m above the building top if closer. This releases digester gases (hydrogen sulphide, methane) safely above nose level.
Each compartment also needs an access opening with a sound, close-fitting cover. Cracked stone slabs and loose RCC lids are how children and gases meet accidents. Use a proper SFRC or FRP manhole cover with frame — light-duty for garden locations, medium/heavy-duty wherever two-wheelers or cars pass over the tank.

Discharging effluent into an open drain. This dumps pathogen-rich, half-treated sewage into the street and defeats the entire system; Swachh Bharat's ODF++ norms and pollution-control enforcement both target exactly this practice. Always terminate the outlet in a soak pit or dispersion trench sized from a percolation test.
Undersizing the tank. A 1,000 L box for 8 people gives a few hours of detention instead of 24–48, so solids wash straight out and choke the soak pit. Follow the IS 2470 users-to-size table and go one size up if greywater also enters.
Skipping the soak pit "for now." Without soil dispersion, the tank fills to the outlet and backs up at the first heavy use or rain. Budget the ₹8,000–20,000 for the pit on day one; it is not an optional accessory.
Washing the tank spotless after desludging. The bacteria that digest your sewage live in the sludge; IS 2470 and the CPHEEO-based desludging SOPs say to leave at least a 25 mm layer behind as seeding material. A sterilised tank restarts from zero and performs poorly for weeks.
Siting near a borewell. Effluent plumes travel through soil; a soak pit within 18 m of a drinking-water well can contaminate it with nitrates and pathogens you will never taste until someone falls ill. Measure the distance before digging, not after.
Sending a person inside the tank. Septic tanks hold hydrogen sulphide and methane that can render a person unconscious in seconds, and hazardous manual cleaning of septic tanks is prohibited under the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act, 2013. Use a vacuum tanker, open the lid and let the tank vent 10–15 minutes before any work near the opening, and never lean into it.
IS 2470 recommends roughly 1.5 m × 0.75 m × 1.05 m liquid depth (about 1,200 litres liquid capacity) for 5 users on a two-year cleaning cycle, with 300 mm freeboard. In ready-made terms, buy a 1,500 L tank rather than the bare-minimum 1,000 L, especially if bathroom water also enters it.
